Trust me, I know a thing or two about feeling like you need to "fix" yourself.
I spent years telling myself those stories too, feeling desperate to fit into a mold that society kept telling me was the right way to be.
- I studied at the fanciest schools.
- Made sure I was the best friend, best daughter, and best partner ALL the time.
- Racked up every brass ring I could find (internships, academic fellowships, professional awards - you name it, I was striving for it).
And yet, I still felt totally horrible.
Feeling confident, I felt anxious at any and every sign.
I'd claim conventional marriage was outdated but secretly desperate for a romantic relationship to validate my existence.
Loving my body, I felt constantly under scrutiny about my curves and couldn't help but obsess over the idea that if I just lost 15 pounds, I'd feel so much happier as me.
Cut to a nervous breakdown in 2018, working on my own self development and finding my true passion in empowerment coaching (with a focus in adolescent behavior) and I started to finally figure out what the hell was going on.
The thought patterns I battled for years and the ones my clients were bringing into sessions weren't isolated.
Not accidental. Not random.
They were a product of all the messages women pick up as girls that teach us how to find praise, validation and approval. How to socialize. How to seek out love.
To fit a mold of what women are expected to be, designed by a patriarchal society.
